  9-23

We added a Community Outreach page to help us focus on efforts by our citizenry to make a difference both locally, regionally and nationally.

9-22 a resident shares re: The Red Cross Lemonade stand
"Thank you - as always, I am encouraged by those people who provide positive role models for their children and their neighbors."
  9-29

What we can do as a community was a topic at the September Master's meeting. Many CPN residents had been discussing what we can do as a community to help in response. There was a suggestion to hold a rummage sale for the relief effort but as of that point, no volunteers were available.

9-20 resident Stacey asks for community help:

Dear Homeowners,

On Saturday, September 22nd, my children will be setting up a lemonade stand on the corner of Monarch and Castle Pines Pkwy to raise money to go to the Red Cross for the National Relief Fund.

I ask that you send a message to our children that though they may be young they CAN make a difference. In doing so, you too will make a difference and show your support for those families who lost loved ones on September 11th. Please take one minute out of your day and stop by and have a glass of lemonade. Thank you all for helping.

The community response raised hundreds of dollars thru this effort. Pictures of the stand and copy are on Community Outreach.

9-20 Lorrie, from Noble Ridge writes:
"As a volunteer for Abba Family Services, I would love to come and pick up any of your used children's clothing, toys or furniture that you no longer need. Some of our foster children are taken away from their homes with nothing but what they have on and therefore, the needs of the foster parents are great...........thanks!"

9-21 Forest Park resident and CEO of Show Your Colors Flag Company, Jeff Tomczak sends in:

Hello, my name is Jeff Tomczak. I live in Forest Park and my wife, Dora and I, own Show Your Colors Flag Company.

If anyone is looking for U.S. flags, I have them. Granted, I have a limited supply, but I'm getting more each day. Many of you have already contacted me, and I want to thank you. For those of you who haven't, please visit our store at Parker & Yale (Cub Foods shopping center) in Aurora. Please call us for our hours.

If you can't make it, send me an e-mail or leave me a voice mail and I'll bring them home with me and deliver them at night.

We encourage you to lower your U.S. flags to half-staff until futher notice.

Please remove all other flags from flagpoles except for the United States flag. The United States flag should remain at half-staff alone.

Thank You, Jeff Tomczak (303) 745-9035 x 109

  11-3 a resident responds:
"I have MHO.net wireless so far and have been impressed. Not nearly as fast as the cable modem I had before moving here, but much faster than dialup. Certain times of the day it appears to be slow, but typically has good speed. I use the 512kb package."

10-28 Jeff in KnightsBridge is getting good wireless service!!

"Having used Qwest dialup Internet on what appeared to be a never-ending queue of problems, I could not wait until Broadband was available in CPN. DSL came too slowly; after months of promises (and frankly, I couldn't give Qwest any more money especially after not trying harder to place the right understructure for CPN) I was ready to make a move soon to something cheap, fast and reliable.

Qwest aside, AT&T; Broadband would rather find customers elsewhere and Direct PC is not a viable product for a power Internet user like me, so when MHO.net came along, I was more than willing to give it a try.

Now I’m paying $59 dollars a month for 1Mbps up and down Internet service ($39 a month buys you 512Kbps up and down). For you non-techno geeks, 1Mbps is nearly 20 times faster than Dialup Internet. Way to go Mile High Online (MHO)! From what I understand the tower is atop the golf club house, and can service much of CP/CPN area. I have a 12 or so square inch receiver/transmitter, sending microwave back and forth from the tower. It’s always online, no ‘dialup time’; just sit down at my PC and go.

So far the service has been great. There have been minor interruptions, but it is nearly as I can tell, always up. In our cul-de-sac 3 homes already have it, and I know of a handful elsewhere in CPN already using it. Want more bandwidth, try up too 11Mbps for some homes, all you do is pay more. Try getting a reliable DSL or Dialup or Cable Modem at these prices, and it’s available now. When MHO does local phone service, I’ll switch."

9-30 Mark in Forest Park shares:

"We recently moved to Forest Park and the AT&T; installer told us that this area is targeted for Broadband by the end of the year (probably optimistic). I think the more people who call requesting it would make it more appealing for them to bring the service to us.

Secondly I am disgusted with Qwest's distance change! I have 2 phone lines and pay almost $100 with all their BS charges and that is without a single call.

Is there any cell service provider that works well in the Forest Park area? I have Verizon and it is less than perfect. Please let me know - I would love to drop Qwest."

Any resident willing to share advice on service providers? We are our best resource...
9-18 A BristleCone resident sends in, "Fed-up with Qwest"

"Lacking DSL or broadband, I was hoping to utilize the Qwest one-number answering promotion so I could be online and still get phone calls. This would be preferable to a second line with another DISTANCE CHARGE (read ripoff) plus taxes, fees, etc. that Qwest told me would double my bill. Their promotion involves a cell phone that when turned on would augment and override the basic line. The "anywhere" minutes would save LD charges.

Sounded great until I found out homes west of Monarch were in a "hole" in their service. I tried several different phones but none could hold onto the antenna, which is near the Monarch - CP Parkway intersection. I tested this out and east of this area the cell phone would register full strength. Apparently the antenna is directional and aimed east for the convenience of the business area and the phone users on I-25. (Also Qwest told me the antenna had a max limit on calls and cell phones coming on with stronger connections will bump the weaker ones, such as mine.)

It was a frustrating experience, including the fact that all this was learned from numerous conversations with about a dozen different Qwest reps. ATT/ATT Cable doesn't serve CPN yet. According to Sprint's website, it has high speed service throughout the south metro area but ending at Highlands Ranch. Distance charges? No cell phone service? No broadband? What must we do to get adequate service?"

We have been told that Qwest is doing DSL in HOA #1 to specific exchanges. Covad has emailed us that they too are offering DSL in CPN. MHO.net wants us to know that they also offer service here. No updated word from AirBlaster.

What is a resident to do? Where in the midst of all of this, is true service? So here is what we have received from the community to date to post.

9-2 Gerry, a resident from Claremont, writes in:
"Well, here's the thing. I tried for months to get DSL with Covad in CPN. I do not believe it was feasible in large part because I could never get that infamous other group to hook me up from my pedestal to my house. I had to re-order with Covad each time the connection appointment was "missed" as my request for service would be deleted. Quite frustrating as I had paid to have my home prepped/wired for DSL - money and effort that subsequently had to be abandoned. I believe there are many people in Castle Pines North who would truly be interested and receptive in alternatives to Qwest. But my personal Covad experience is not as upbeat."

9-4 Gary, a BriarCliff resident responds re: DSL service
"I am a Covad employee and read your email with both curiousity and dismay. It is highly unusual for Covad to cancel a service request because Qwest misses an appt. If you can post your Covad order # to the CPN forum, I will have a look, and make sure it gets addressed asap." (www.covad.com)
