Perennials: |

Penstemons
are commonly called "Beardstongue" and thrive on low irrigation
and poor soil. They are considered a challenge in other parts of
the country but are native to western America. I have had varieties
survive (neglected them too) as perennials for years in CPN, faithfully
blooming, attracting hummingbirds, never had a bug problem with
them either.
They
are hardy, drought-tolerant and beautiful.
There
is a Penstemon
website. My favorite is "Prairie Jewel".

Tool of the Week: |

This
tool is a cross between a knife and a trowel and is excellent for
planting, transplanting, grubbing, removing roots and weeds, dividing
perennials. The blade is dished and has a serrated edge on one side
and a sharpened edge on the other. Does well in our crappy soil.
I got
my Japanese Farmer's Knife at www.leevalley.com
for $17.50 in the Gardening section, under Trowels. It comes with
a sheath.

This
member of the Viburnum family (Viburnum x burkwoodii) is hard to
find but so worth it. It has the best scented white-clustered flowers
in spring. The scent lasts weeks and is among the most fragrant
of all bushes. It is memorable.
Mine is in a very dry, NE shaded location (gets only 2-3hrs/light/day). It is partly evergreen. Grows square shaped (tall as is broad) to 6'. Zone 4.

Seriously,
a golf bag attached to a pull-behind cart makes the best tool
caddy for working in the yard. It doesn't easily tip, rolls
over everything and you can stow a rake and other long handled
things in the club slots with enough additional pockets for
pruners, trowels and what-not.
Pick
up a used bag at a yard sale, commandeer your spouse's spare,
watch the golf outlets' sales and grab a cart. It works great.
