Citizens Group Organizes to Save Bluffs West of I-25

One of the last remaining areas of undeveloped land between Lone Tree and Castle Pines North is being considered for annexation and rezoning by the City of Lone Tree to build 88 luxury homes atop the bluffs. This subdivision, previously denied by Douglas County, could be rolled into the massive Ridgegate development, where the new hospital is going up.

A group of interested citizens from surrounding neighborhoods have formed the Bluffs Preservation Pledge Campaign in hopes of preserving this unique property as open space. More than $90,000 has been already been pledged in the first month in amounts ranging from $10 to $10,000.

These 230 acres connect Bluffs Regional Park just south of the Lone Tree golf course to the Highlands Ranch Conservation Area, just north of Castle Pines North. It was the intent of the Douglas County Master Plan that this area remained as a buffer between urban areas and to protect the highly visible ridgelines.

The rock outcroppings, canyons and meadows provide vital habitat and migration corridors for herds of elk, deer and antelope. Over 90 species of birds, reptiles and small mammals call this area home. It makes good ecological sense to save this land.

The Trust for Public Land, a nationally known non-profit organization, has expressed interest in working with The City of Lone Tree, Douglas County, Great Outdoors Colorado as well as other private non-profits, to acquire this open space of regional and statewide significance.

The most successful of these types of acquisitions include participation by local citizens and businesses as a demonstration that there is a broad level of community support behind the project. Your help is needed for a successful pledge campaign.
