New Traffic Signal to be Installed at Yorkshire Drive

The Castle Pines Metro District’s requests for a four-way-stop at the intersection of Castle Pines Parkway and Yorkshire Drive began in 1990. At that time, a stop sign installation was not approved by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

In 2000, requests for a traffic signal at this intersection began. Now, five years later, the intersection has been re-reviewed, and a traffic signal will be installed later this year.

The FHWA has established traffic signal warrants, which are based primarily on the amount of traffic an intersection must handle. Other considerations include safety performance of the intersection, proximity to school crossings, and other roadway network considerations.

“A typical traffic signal installation averages $200,000. However, the Castle Pines Parkway and Yorkshire Drive traffic signal project will cost more, due to the installation of a communication conduit between Monarch Blvd. and Lagae Road,” said Alex Larson of the Douglas County Public Works Department.

Although not budgeted for 2005, the County's Traffic Engineering department was able to find funding available from savings on other projects. The potential for additional traffic generated by the proposed Castle View Park was a key element in the drive to fund the project in 2005.

According to Larson, “The traffic signal at Castle Pines Parkway and Yorkshire Drive should be completed in late summer to early fall.”

For information about additional traffic signals in CPN, please contact Alex Larson at 303 660-7490 or by e-mail at pubwrks@douglas.co.us. If appropriate, a study will be initiated to evaluate intersections of concern.
