Help Protect our Sanitation System

Wastewater from Castle Pines North doesn’t stay in our Metro District. From our water treatment plant, it subsequently flows into the Plum Creek Wastewater Authority’s system. The PCWA recently provided these tips for helping to keep the system running smoothly:

Household Dangers for Sewage Systems

Fats, Oils & Greases:

A by-product of cooking, grease comes from meat fats, lard, oil, butter, food scrapes, sauces and dairy products. When washed down the sink, grease adheres to the insides of sewer pipes (both on your property and in the main collection systems). Over time, grease can build up and block the entire pipe, causing sewage to overflow into your home or into public streets.

What you can do to help:

Never pour grease down sink drains; collect grease in a container for disposal with regular garbage.

Scrape grease and food scraps into a garbage receptacle.

Utilize baskets or strainers in sink drains to catch food scraps and other solids.

Household Chemicals:

Household chemicals are anything utilized in the home that have potential of causing problems within the collection system and wastewater facility. These items include:

Paints, inks, solvents and varnishes.

Garden chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides.

Automotive batteries, fluids and fuels.

What you can do to help:

Eliminate excess leftover chemicals by purchasing only what is necessary.

Utilize your Annual Household Chemical Roundup for disposal instead of the sanitary sewer.

The next organized Chemical Roundup in Castle Rock is scheduled for September 27, 2003. It will be held at the Castle Rock Maintenance Yard, 675 Justice Way. For more information on the Chemical Roundup, call Justin at 720-322-1541.
