Update to Current CPN-Vicinity Highway Construction Projects

Castle Pines Parkway Bridge

Construction on the Castle Pines Parkway Bridge (exit 188 over I-25) began on Friday, May 21.

The Bridge is being replaced with a multi-lane expanded one that will provide a new bridge over I-25 with two lanes eastbound, two lanes westbound, and a center turn lane.  A loop ramp will be constructed in the southeast quadrant providing a direct movement from eastbound Castle Pines to northbound I-25, and the northbound off ramp to Castle Pines will be relocated to allow the loop ramp construction.

The project, which will be completed on or around June 15, 2005, has been moving along as scheduled with most of the work being completed during the day.  However, there has been some night work which has required two-lane closures of I-25.  These closures are needed to build center piers for the new bridge.

Some of the major work that has already been completed:

  • Approximately 10 percent of earthwork (cut and fill)
  • Construction of two bridge columns and pier caps to support half of the new bridge
  • Construction of half of the two new bridge abutments
  • Directional boring under I-25 for Qwest and IREA
  • Placement of all new right of way perimeter fence
  • Most erosion control features are in place
  • One wetland has been protected
  • Most surveying has been complete

For the next several weeks, Hamon Contractors plans on continuing earthwork during the day and bridge work at night (9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday).  Hamon has scheduled to install 10 concrete girders on the nights of July 12 and 13.  This will trigger a complete closure of I-25 in both directions will require a traffic detour on and off I-25 ramps.  Slight delays during these days and hours should be expected.

Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) Bridge

The existing Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) Bridge over I-25, just north of Wolfsenberger Road, is slated for replacement, and work is scheduled to begin in July, not June as originally reported.

As part of the South I-25 Mainline Widening, the existing bridge will be replaced with a new one designed to accommodate six lanes of I-25, as well as provide improved safety for the northbound on-ramp from Wolfsenberger.  The new bridge will be constructed just south of the existing railroad bridge.

The Project is scheduled be completed by September 2005. There will be some impact on I-25, such as night closures, when the old structure is removed and new girders are set.

Crystal Valley/Dawson Ridge (south of Plum Creek exit, formerly referred to as the Douglas Lane Interchange)

This project is being managed by Douglas County, with CDOT as a participating agency.  This is a proposed new interchange, approximately two miles south of the existing Plum Creek Interchange.  The proposed new access point to I-25 will be located at the existing Territorial Road and Douglas Lane, which will be renamed to Crystal Valley Parkway and then to Dawson Ridge Parkway in the future.

Douglas County will be hosting an Open House for residents concerned about or interested in the Crystal Valley/Dawson Ridge Interchange.

The Open House will be on July 15th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Douglas County Events Center.
