Major Accident Under Castle Pines Parkway Bridge Causes Delays on I-25

On Wednesday morning, June 8, at approximately 9:30 a.m., a truck carrying a back hoe crashed into a car on Castle Pines Parkway near the entrance to I-25.

The truck then proceeded to the I-25 northbound on-ramp loop and attempted to get on the highway.  The truck ignored warning signs that the bridge at I-25 and Castle Pines Parkway is designed for cars/trucks with a maximum height of 15 feet. The truck was 18 feet high, so the equipment on the truck hit the bridge as well as four of the bridge’s girders.
Although the truck was carrying construction equipment, it was not at all related to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) bridge and ramp project.

A Colorado State Patrolman was in the process of giving another car a ticket near the bridge at the time of the accident, and witnessed the entire thing.  He was able to apprehend the truck driver.

According to CDOT, nobody was hurt in any part of the accident(s).

Engineers have inspected the bridge, and have deemed it safe for travel, but it is in need of repair.

As a result of the accident, the bridge was closed from the time of the accident until approximately noon.  Traffic was detoured for vehicles wanting to travel northbound on I-25 from Castle Pines Parkway, as well as vehicles traveling northbound on I-25 and wanting to exit at Castle Pines Parkway.

While the estimated construction completion date is going to remain July 8, there is now a need for additional bridge and ramp closures and detours so that the damage caused by the accident can be repaired.

The Castle Pines North Master Association will publish any known detours and closures in advance so that travelers may plan their driving routes accordingly.

A short bridge closure occurred from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on the night of June 7 to allow for painting and road striping on the bridge.

For construction updates, continue to check the CPN homepage (www.cpnhoa.org) and the “I-25 Construction Updates” section of the web site (click on the construction icon on the homepage).

Closures known in advance may also be sent via the CPN e-mail alert program.
