Sheriff Orders Full Fire Restrictions for Douglas County |
||||||||||
The ordinance was enacted in order to protect public health, safety, and welfare of the public, and will remain in effect until further notice. The Commissioners’ decision was based on current dry weather conditions, the threat of a wildfire, and as a proactive approach to eliminate human-caused fire ignition sources. “Maintaining the public’s safety is our ultimate goal and responsibility,” said Sheriff Michael Acree of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. The ordinance prohibits all open burning and open campfires, charcoal grills outside of developed residential areas, and wood burning stoves within buildings. The restrictions are not intended to prohibit fires within liquid fueled or gas fueled stoves, fireplaces within buildings, charcoal grill fires within developed residential areas, and wood burning stoves within buildings. Violation of these fire restrictions is a Class-2 Petty Offense, punishable by up to a $600.00 fine and a $10.00 surcharge. All inquires about the ordinance should be directed to the Douglas County Emergency Management department at 303-660-7589 or visit their website at www.douglas.co.us/emergencyservices. |
