County Compiling Data Base for Special Needs Residents

by Terri Wiebold

Douglas County Emergency Management Director, Jaime Moore, was a guest speaker at the Master Association’s meeting on February 16. Moore works in cooperation with numerous local, state and federal agencies to provide emergency management programs to better equip Douglas County in handling disasters.

“The biggest push for our department in 2006 is addressing the elderly population and those individuals with special needs,” said Moore. Emergency Management is currently working on a "Special Populations Project" to identify those individuals in our community who are bedridden, homebound, disabled, or who might require special assistance in an evacuation situation. They are establishing a data base of those individuals and their addresses, as well as mapping their location for emergency personnel. It is important that anyone with special needs contact Moore’s office and register on the database.

Moore also discussed the task force initiated by the CPN Master Association Safety Committee, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and South Metro Fire Rescue following the Cherokee Ranch fire in 2004. The task force is working on emergency evacuation procedures - specifically access gates and signage, and communication and notification issues.

Moore encouraged individual HOAs to contact his office at emergencymanagement@sheriff.net or 303-660-7589 and set up a time for him to come out to monthly meetings and discuss these issues further.
