The following is an excerpt taken from a letter written by Kurtis Kroeckel of Daniel’s Gate to the CPN Master Association:

“I am raising a safety issue that needs prompt attention. The Daniel’s Gate Recreation pool is located across Monarch Boulevard from the Serena development. Children and adults who wish to walk to the pool must cross Monarch at Catarata Way or at Serena Ave....I believe that the Metro District should install a pathway on the east side of Monarch between Catarata Way and Serena Ave. The pathway should have a connection to Monarch at the intersection of Daniel’s Gate Road and Monarch....The Serena development is the only neighborhood I am aware of that has to cross the main thoroughfare of Monarch to gain access to their pool.”

Dear Mr. Kroeckel:

Thank you for calling to our attention to this important safety concern in Daniel’s Gate. Since we received your letter, the Castle Pines North (CPN) Master Association Safety Committee Chairperson, Janet Conner, and Charlie Fagan, Parks and Open Space Manager for the CPN Metro District, have been diligently working with Douglas County Public Works to resolve this issue.

Bob Kenny, Principal Traffic Engineer for Douglas County met with Conner and Fagan to review arial maps and enhanced diagrams of your suggested solutions to this problem. As a result, the Metro District will be building a six foot wide, 1,415-foot trail from Catarata Way to Daniel’s Gate, as part of a two-phase project. The estimated cost for the new trail is $64,000.

In addition, Douglas County will install a pedestrian - activated crossing light and crosswalk in the middle of Monarch Boulevard, in between Catarata Way and Serena Ave.

This fall, the Metro District hopes to install phase one of the trail from Catarata Way to Daniel’s Gate Road (about 615 feet.) Next spring, the Metro District will complete the trail from the new crosswalk north of Daniel’s Gate Road to Serena Avenue. According to Fagan, the preliminary plans with the County have been very positive. He hopes to complete this area of “missing trails” so that families in Daniel’s Gate can safely cross the street to visit the community pool.
