Is Change in the Air for Centennial Airport?
|
||||||||||
Past issues of The Connection have reported on recommendations by Centennial Airport officials addressing community concerns on aircraft flight patterns and noise issues surrounding the airport (the Part 150 Study.) While there has been no movement by the Federal Aviation Administration on the study, there is an ongoing situation that could potentially have an impact on the Castle Pines North (CPN) community in the near future. A proposed development, which would include the construction of 1,615 residential units within the Centennial Airport Influence Area, is currently being considered by the Centennial City Council. The Council approved the ordinance for a pre-annexation agreement on a first reading at its February 5 Centennial City Council meeting. Centennial Airport authorities have expressed concern that such a development, if approved, would have a negative impact on the Airport Influence Area. According to Airport Executive Director, Robert Olislagers, “While this project would not immediately force any potential for changes in flight patterns … it could have significant impact on our north/south runways and add additional traffic both north and south of the airport in the future. We want to avoid that at all cost,” he said. “It is our opinion that exposing thousands of potential new residents to aircraft noise is not in anyone’s best interest,” said Olislangers. “Especially when the law says it is a bad idea. We also have safety concerns so close to the airport,” he continued. As of press time, the Tanterra developers had requested this issue be tabled for a few months to give them time to talk with the City of Centennial, airport authorities, and others potentially impacted by the development.
