The Scoop on Off–Leash Areas

Douglas County offers three fenced-in, off-leash areas for canine companions. Most who use the parks are delighted to have places where dogs can run, play and socialize. As you might expect, as the parks are used more, there are more opportunities for problems and The Pet Stuff Place has heard from many of its clients about near misses and out-and-out attacks while at a park.

Going to the off-leash park does not mean it is an opportunity to ignore what our dogs are doing. Quite the opposite is true … it is actually a time for us to pay close attention. Plus, it is yet another “opportunity” to always pick up the poop!!

There are many on-line resources that offer tips for dog park socialization. Of the top ten tips for new visitors to dog parks, the following three are the most fundamental: Make your first visit without your dog. Keep walking - walking defuses defensive behaviors and helps keep the off-leash area neutral territory. Be aware that dogs have different play styles – educate yourself about dog behavior.

Please remember, dog parks are not a place for puppies younger than four to five months of age. Yes, socializing your puppy is one of the most important things you will ever do with your pet, but the dog park is not the place to do it. Dog parks can be dangerous, scary and overwhelming for little guys, perhaps giving your pup a life-long problem with other dogs. Please, socialize your puppy safely among peers in a supervised “puppy kindergarten” setting.
