Earning the rank of Eagle in Boy Scouts is not easy. It is not meant to be – the Eagle award is designed to teach boys hard work and leadership.

Even by Eagle Scout standards, 16-year-old Trevor Haynie’s Eagle project was a tough one. Haynie, who lives in Castle Pines North (CPN), and his friends built an 800-foot fence for the Trail of Hope Horse Rescue in Sedalia.

“Trevor, his wonderful family, and his fellow scouts and their parents have been amazing. The amount of time and effort donated by this group is extremely generous,” said Regina Provosto, a director at Trail of Hope.
“Trevor’s dad and several other dads even came out and worked in the blistering heat on Father’s Day.”

The fence closes a 10-acre pasture, which will provide additional pasture area for the horses, all of which have been rescued from abusive situations. The additional pasture land will also allow the horses to graze during summer months, cutting down on feed costs.

Trevor, who is a member of Troop 637 in Sedalia, got involved in Scouting because he loves to be outdoors. His troop camps out at least once every month, even in the winter.

“This project appealed to me because of the physical activity it required,” said Haynie. “We dug the fence posts and built the fence.”

Heavy physical labor does not seem to bother Haynie.
A self-proclaimed animal lover, Haynie said the project made him feel good about helping the horses. “It’s also been great to get outside with my friends, work hard, and have a good time,” he said.

Boys interested in achieving the rank of Eagle must complete all the requirements for the honor before their eighteenth birthday. At just 16, Haynie is a few years early, but he plans to continue his scouting activities until he graduates from Denver Academy a few years from now.

“I love camping and being outdoors and Scouts is a great way to do that,” he said.
