Annual Carnival Draws Crowds

Timber Trail Elementary’s (TTE) biggest fundraiser of the year, the Fall Carnival, drew large crowds and earned more than $7,000 for the TTEA to fund Timber Trail’s own science teacher. Other fundraising efforts are also meeting with success. TTEA is now selling gift cards to King Soopers, Starbucks, Wendy’s, Red Robin, Borders, Barnes & Noble, The Gap, Chili’s and a whole host of other retailers. Cards are sold at no additional cost to the consumer, but the school receives a portion of the money received (anywhere from three to twenty-one percent of the purchase price.) To purchase gift cards, e-mail ttea_scrip@comcast.net for details.

School Security, Development

The School Advisory Council (SAC), a group of interested parents and other citizens, met with Douglas County School Security official Larry Borland to discuss safety at the school. Parents discussed emergency drills, procedures for school evacuations, and security technology at the school.

Also discussed at the meeting was the new commercial development being constructed adjacent to the school. Ron Skarka, a representative from Village Homes, was on hand to answer questions about traffic as well as the possible makeup of commercial retailers.

“It is our hope that the business closest to the school will be a daycare facility,” said Skarka. “We don’t know, however, what exactly will be there yet. It will take time for this project to evolve.”

TTE Techies

Students at Timber Trail can now get their hands on some cutting-edge technology, thanks to funds from the TTEA. Projectors and digital cameras are now in every classroom. Kindergartners and first graders participate in interactive reading activities and students in the upper grades are busy making music, creating maps and shooting podcasts about world explorers.

Library Open, Thanks to Parents

TTE has been without a librarian since the beginning of the school year in July, but parent volunteers have picked up the slack to keep the library open.

“Alisa Sattem [a volunteer] has done an outstanding job of organizing over 90 volunteers to help check out books and do read alouds,” said TTE Principal Michelle Radke.
