Prescription (Rx) and over-the counter (OTC) drug abuse, often called “pharming,” is a growing national trend, especially among teens. Studies show that nationally, three percent of kids age 12 to 17 are abusing presription drugs.
While all kids in grades 7 and 8 are required to take health classes where the topic of drug use and other risky behaviors is discussed, research shows that parental disapproval is one of the most powerful ways to influence teens. When parents talk, kids listen. However, surveys of teens show that parents are not discussing the dangers of prescription and OTC drugs with them.
On April 19, the annual Families and Schools: Active Partners, will hold a special session called “Having Hard Conversations with Your Kids.” The free event covering many topics of interest to families, will be held at Chaparral High School from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. No registration required.
