Adult for a Day

Getting a job, paying bills, and budgeting are not usually on the “to-do” list of a ten or eleven year old. But fifth graders at Timber Trail spent a day learning about economics by spending a day in the adult world.

Young AmeriTowne is a project sponsored by the Young Americans Center for Financial Education, located at the Young Americans Bank in Cherry Creek. “It is a simulated community where students are assigned a job, receive a paycheck, and then experience the ups and downs of free-enterprise for themselves,” said fifth-grade teacher Kimberly Jester.

All that adult responsibility seemed to agree with student Sam Wellman. “Young AmeriTowne was a valuable experience and will stay in my memory for years to come,” he said. “I loved my job and co-workers. It was the highlight of my fifth grade year.”

A New Year

Summer is just starting, but for most students at Timber Trail, classes will begin soon. Because TTE operates on a four-track calendar, the first day of school is July 7 for more than three quarters of the student body.

Fun and Funds

As one school year draws to a close and another one begins, the Timber Trail Education Alliance (TTEA) is taking stock of its fundraising efforts.

“We have raised approximately $35,000 so far, not including the golf tournament,” said TTEA President Jill Buck. “The leaves on our Learning Tree will be coming down and we will be putting new ones up for a new contribution campaign for the 2008-2009 school year.”

A golf tournament will be held at The Ridge Golf Course on Wednesday, June 4. As of press time, a few spaces were still available. Contact the school office for more information.

Timber Trail Tracks Back July 7

A year-round calendar means that the first day of school happens early for most students at Timber Trail Elementary. Students on tracks A, C and D begin classes on July 7. Students on B track begin on July 28.

Unlike years previous, goal setting will take place on the first two days of school for Kindergarteners only. Students in grades one through five will attend regularly-scheduled classes (with required attendance) on the first day of school.

Timber Trail is the only school in CPN currently on the year-round track calendar.
