WHAT: Sheriff’s Office First Ask-A-Cop Event a Huge Success
NARRATIVE: DOUGLAS COUNTY: The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deemed their first Ask-A-Cop event a huge success. The event, which was held on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at four locations throughout the county, was planned in order to provide citizens with more one-on-one time with deputies in a non-adversarial setting. The booths were set up in the front entrance way of each location and a banner was hung to make sure they were visible.
The deputies came with a lot of information and McGruff the Crime Dog was on hand to pass out goodies to the kids. Deputies at the locations reported that they were well received by the citizens and were asked a lot of great questions. It was estimated that there were over 400 people that stopped by all the booths. The following are some of the most common questions that were asked:
• Many traffic related questions.
• How many officers patrol in Douglas County on a given shift?
• Child seat rules and regulations regarding ages and weight.
• Teen driver rules for new drivers.
• How does the Castle Pines North incorporation affect their law enforcement services?
• How will the new alarm ordinance affect the Sheriff’s Office response to homes?
• How do line personnel feel about the current Sheriff’s Office administration?
• Hoes does the Community Safety Volunteer program work?
Some citizens had questions about other departments in the county, deputies were able to direct them to the correct place to get their questions answered.
Newly elected Castle Pines North Mayor, Maureen Schul, joined the deputies at the Castle Pines North location and was very appreciative that they were there to answer questions.
Sheriff Weaver made an appearance at all four locations and was pleased by the deputies who were manning the booths. “This was an idea that the deputies came up with and they proved that this type of communication with our community can only make the relationship stronger. I am very impressed with their proactive approach,” stated Weaver.
