WHAT IS CERT…? The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program helps train people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities. When emergencies happen, CERT members give critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims and organize volunteers at a disaster site.
The CERT course is taught in the community by a trained team of first responders who have completed a CERT course conducted by their state training office for emergency management, or FEMA's Emergency Management Institute (EMI). CERT training includes disaster preparedness, disaster fire suppression, basic disaster medical operations, light search and rescue operations and terrorism awareness. WHAT IF SCENARIO… Favorable weather conditions create a line of thunderstorms over the Denver metropolitan area. The advancing front spawns an F-2 tornado over Castle Pines North that touches down in a populated area.
The CPN area sustains moderate damage with the majority of the tornadic force hitting the Buffalo Ridge Elementary School. The resulting damage includes the immediate collapse of the roof and scattered debris. This horrific event occurs while school is in progress and the scope of injury, damage and loss due to the impact of the storm is not known. Due to the widespread damage caused by the swath of the storm most area roads are impassable. Public safety personnel are responding to multiple areas with heavy structural damage throughout the county but are not expected to be on site immediately. Douglas County CERT has been activated to respond to Buffalo Ridge to work with first responders to render aid and assistance. WHAT CAN I DO…? Join us at our monthly meeting and learn how you can help your family, friends and neighbors in an emergency.
