Well, it was a vocal month. Comments were quite polar and some took exception to speaking out period, but by and large, the community spoke for responsible pet ownership NOW.

Are we "going to the dogs" and foregoing responsible pet ownership?

This is what you had to say about it...

"Dog barking has become a major problem in this neighborhood. I wish owners would fulfill their responsibilities by addressing the problem and finding and fixing whatever is causing their dogs to bark so much."

"This a family area....People complaining about dogs going for walks, must be unhappy. I am happy to see families walking together with their loved pets....Maybe these complainers should get a life...get a animal ....get off your butts and go for a walk...you will be a happier person ....start enjoying life...stop complaining!"

"I have a neighbor (who owns a dog but refuses to build a fence for the dog) on our corner who lets their dog run rampant every day - no leash ever! Their dog runs through our yards, messes in our yards, and sits on our porch barking at my cat who is an indoor only cat.

The nieghbors directly behind us have dogs that bark non-stop, to the point that we have had to change our lifestyles, for example, we now are closing our windows when we would otherwise have them open because the dogs bark so much we can't stand the noise.

I've talked with both pet owners, made formal compaints to both the home owner's association as well as Douglas County animal control, yet nothing changes. And this has been going on since we moved into our home five years ago.

I would like to see my home owner's association find some way to take action. The dog that runs rampant should have a fence, and the barkers should be in the house at night so they don't bark outside all night."

"A friend and I walk every Mon. Wed. and Fri. in the early morning. There is always a male runner, who has a black mid-sized dog who runs behind him, without a leash. We have asked him where his leash is, and he says "It's at home." I don't know why this man feels above the law while everyone else has their dog on a leash. If anyone knows where he lives, please report his address @ 660-7529 and they will ticket this irresponsible pet owner."

"People should be responsible for picking up after their pets. I do think it would be a great idea to have plastic pet bags along the trails, in addition to a couple of extra trash cans. There are times when our dogs have more business than we have bags (in hand) so this would help with the occassional human miscalculations and doggie emergencies. ALSO, this would be a much better use of my HOA dues than the handful of 'parties' at the club house during the year which I NEVER attend. I also don't visit the pool so doggie poop bags and trash cans seem to be a much better use of my dues."

"My husband and I have no pets, and do enjoy walking the lighted pathways in the evening. It would be wonderful if pet owners took the responsibility of cleaning up after their pets and if they would just sit on thier patio's and listen to the dogs that bark when people are on the pathways. Thank you pet owners for accepting the responsibility that you chose when you got your pet."

"Definitely people should keep their dogs (especially) in their own yards and let them clean up after their own pets."

"Let's have a fenced in dog relief area - it is crazy to see the cars parked on Monarch just north of CP Pkwy and the dogs let run - you can't walk anywhere on the grass."

"Most people do not have control of their pets. They walk them on a 30 foot lead letting them do whatever they want. Whether its relieving themselves on someone else's lawn or running up into a child or another animal's face. Perhaps they should learn how to control their animal before they purchase one. Barking at all hours of the day and night is another problem in the area. Dogs left home with pet doors and no owners are bothersome to us all. I have pets and children and accept responsibility for them. Maybe we could all try to do the same."

"Of course everything is not perfect. Howewver nearly all of the pet owners I have met are already responsible pet owners. Responsible owners are the ones who bother to take them for walks rather than leaving them in a hot garage. Also, the owners I have run into seem to be very cooperative in controling their animals and cleaning up after them. I suspect we have a rather vocal minority of animal-phobes in the negihborhood who want to impose their ideas on anyone who does not fit into their well ordered lifestyle. Get a hobby or something!"

"As a dog owner I believe it my responsibility to pick up after my dog and to provide the means to do it. I do not believe that anyone else should provide bags for me. CPN providing trash cans is appreciated and appropriate because the recepticles can be used for trash other than dog waste. The community should not have to incur such a cost. I further believe that this applies to other services or conveniences that some people want because they would like someone else to pay for their desired amenities."

"I find your comments are very leading towards your obvious point of view. There are a few problems as in any neighborhood, but overall it appears that pet owners are trying to be responsible."

Your Unofficial Webmaster responds: No bias or rancor is intended in posing the question. Comments have been posted unedited that have been sent in and the count stands as "voted". As to the outcome, as with most issues, people who wish to pursue recourse can do so. People who wish to promote tolerance have an equal voice. To that end, we post Living with Pets in CPN.

"Had the problem of barking dogs in the middle of the night for a whole week. I hope the residents know that all it takes is a call to the Humane Society for Douglas Cty. File a report and it escalates from there. They took care of it and it has been quiet since. If neighbors are pissed, take responsibility and call the neighbor or call the county instead of sitting at home fuming or trying to get some sleep. My solution worked."

"Now that we know that there is a problem with dog poop on the trails and open space and dogs running loose, what are we going to do about it?? I'm sure there are plenty of neighbors who would be willing to help to correct the problem. Let's start by fining those that do not pick up after their pets, make doggie bags and trash cans available along the trails. Let's do something!!! Make the open space enjoyable for everyone."

"I am a responsible pet owner and I am appalled by the inconsiderate home and pet owners that have moved into our beautiful community, from allowing pets to defecate on their neighbors lawn, not scooping their furry friends poopy, to allowing them to roam without leashes. And it is not just pets. It's children too!!!!! Toys in the street and unsupervised children (toddlers 2-4 years old) playing in the street with parents no where to be found. And if they can be found, they are usually talking on the telephone or watching television. Shame on you!!!"

"The leash law is ignored by many scofflaws in our midst. These people think their animals should be loved or appreciated by all of us, and allowed to just "be themselves". I like dogs and if I wanted one on my property, or bounding and jumping all over me, I'd get my own. However, we are also very allergic to cats and dogs. It's inconsiderate of these scofflaws to push their animals on the rest of us. And it can be hazardous as my wife found out when a frisky uncontrolled retreiver bounced into her along the parkway sidewalk, nearly knocking her down, and causing her knee to be hyperflexed. She had knee problems for weeks after. We now carry a large stick (BAT) with us whenever we walk and would not hesitate to us it in self-defense, although it would more appropriately be used to knock some sense into the owners' heads."

"I have lived here for over 10 years. I am tired of new people moving in trying to tell us what to do! The dogs need a place to run also! I feel the open space behind some areas dogs should be allowed to run in. I also feel that it is not a dogs fault if an owner is irresponsible and does not control them. Don't take it out on the dogs! Do we complain about the howling coyotes? Yes barking dogs can be a nuisance, but living with people can be a nuisance too! Learn to live with your neighbors or find somewhere else to live!"

"Although we have responsible pet owners living near us who take the time to make sure their animals don't run wild or bark, I have noticed that many dog owners don't seem to give the golf course the same status as their neighbors by cleaning up after the animal. People who play golf at The Ridge pay for the pleasure. When its spoiled by dog waste it makes us all look bad."
"I get tired of seeing people walking their dogs and letting them doo doo all over the open space and not cleaning it up. There is dog doo on the walking trials. Is it that hard to carry a bag and pick up fido's poop? Let's be responsible when walking our dogs!"

"A woof here, a yap-yap there is fine, but when its all day, because these dogs (3-4) are left home alone, it is quite and annoyance. People who do not have air conditioning are leaving open windows and the dogs are constantly barking everytime a child rides by on his bike. Most of my neighbors have dogs and would never know it. It's the one family who is not responsible and never home with their dogs that make you start feeling this way."

"We have a dog, but she is confined to our yard by means of an invisible fence. I am very tired of hosing down stray male dogs to keep them away from her (she is spayed, but I'm afraid they'll hurt her). There is one dog in particular, a big yellow lab, that is ALWAYS loose in the neighborhood (Forest Park). The dog has expired rabies tags and no ID. I managed to find the owner through the expired tags, and she picked up the dog with virtually no apologies. Next time I'm taking the dog to the pound or giving him to someone else who will take care of it. Thanks for allowing me to vent!!"

"I think dogs are gregarious creatures, not given much to isolation. I have listened all day long to dogs crying in garages, chained alongside houses, confined to runs. Since the days of a "working dog" are so long gone, please do not have a dog if you do not want to incorporate it into the family and train it with at least some devotion to its well-being. There are few brutal dogs, there are apparently, brutal humans."

"It is the nature of most dogs to be protective of their territory and family, and bark when someone or another animal threatens these. I do believe it appropriate to limit the number of dogs a household can keep. Perhaps that number should be no more than three. I do believe people who walk their dogs in the common areas need to be considerate enough to pick up after their dogs. The trash cans are there for that purpose. I don't believe people should allow their dogs to run free in the neighborhood, and I haven't seen a great deal of this going on anyway."

"I am amazed at the sense of entitlement some people seem to have about letting their dogs run off leash. They are a danger to others (people and dogs). They may be cute and loving at home, but they are completely different when running loose!"

"To the people who have the little yappy dog (you know who you are) - you put that dog out every evening for hours to bark its brains out. Every night for three years, a person can't even sit out at night. I walked down to your house three times already this summer to tell you but you did not answer your door and I gave up. I monitor my own dogs' barking, and it galls me no end to have quality of life reduced by your dog."

"Hello! I strongly agree with Responsible pet owners. I actually came to the web site looking for a contact person to discuss this exact issue. I think (and I am not the only one) that dog owners should pick up after their dogs on the trails. When moving here we looked forward to walks on the trails and our kids using them. Now we have to side step dog poop on the sidewalks and the smell.... I am not anti pet, in fact we do have a dog and we pick up after her when we take her for a walk. Who do they think picks up the dog poop they leave behind? Maybe we should have a doggie bags available with a trash can at different locations on the trail and make this mandatory. In other areas you are fined if you do not pick up after your pets. The trails should be for everyone and right now it belongs to the big dogs who leave behind their mark."

"I see many responsible pet owners cleaning up after their dogs on our community trails and walk ways. Thank You! I would suggest that our trash receptacles have bags available for those who walk out and "forget" their own cleanup bags."

"I'm a jogger. I've been attacked several times by dogs running at large. And, I don't like having to avoid the poop on the pathways."

"I am tired of dog droppings all over the neighborhood. I have two myself and am COMPLETELY RESPONSIBLE to pick up my dogs "doo" when we walk daily, but it appears others could give a rip! Can we set some reporting and fines for those who care less or install some doggie doo bag dispensers throughout the public walk ways?"

"I am troubled by the number of cats that are at-large. Free-roaming cats are coyote bait. I managed to get to the last cat that was stuck on a utility poll with coyotes at the base and scared them off and got the cat down (no ID; it took off). I also do not want cats coming into my back yard (fenced) as I do have dogs that will chase a cat. I don't want the responsibility for your cat's safety on my conscience. Can't your cat be indoor-only or trained to a halter for walks?"

"I am especially disappointed in pet owners that do not pick up their excrement. They either let their dogs out or walk them and do not clean up after them. I live in the townhouses and the common ground is full of dog droppings. You have to stay on the walkways to keep you shoes clean."

  Outcome, what is the outcome...

Information on how to handle Dog/Cat problems is on this web site at Living with Pets.

We also need to address suggestions about trail pooper-duty and how best to help keep the trails a resource. Please attend the August Master Association meeting and contribute.

To all the people who took the time to express their thoughts - either for tolerance to a particular lifestyle or calling for more personal responsibility on behalf of our selves, neighbors and pets, thank you for speaking up and having a voice.
