If you sent in commentary from 11-3 to 11-11 midday - it was not received by the webmaster. All form submissions and email through the host servers was interrupted and is lost.

Please, if you are up for it, resend whatever you can - we are back up and it tests out as working. Hallelujah.

Missed the chance to speak up? See all the 'CPN Asks' Surveys, go back and take a minute, and be heard!

Get vocal. Participate - it is mostly painless. Tell us what you like and what you don't and what we are still missing. Give it to us straight. We can take it.

Fate of Webmaster rests in the hands of CPN community. (November 2001)
With lousy timing but after a year of committed volunteer effort, your webmaster is pooped and not willing to go on without a basic financial commitment. Webmaster is putting it out to the community because it is time to be truthful and time to decide...

Because CPNers will either value this form of communication and information or they won't. Because you will either sanction dues or revenue being diverted to pay for this site's maintenance and growth or you won't. So since I did this for the CPN community, I leave it up to you to decide.

If there is no legitimate community interest if this site is not 'FREE' then tell me now... "Is it worth anything to you?" Is it worth twenty-five cents a week per family even if it comes from your dues?

So...

    NOVEMBER 2001:

Will you support the continuation of this site - even from dues?

Here are the results - through 4-21-02 of 34 responses (if you submitted during the 11-3-01 to 11-11-01 window, please re-submit - your opinion matters to me and the tech glitsch could not have been more untimely - thanks).

Doing this by simple count of "vote":

Yes, I will add my twenty-five cents.   (30)
Replace her. I know someone for free.   (4)
No. Don't care what happens, let it go.   (3)

*This topic also extends into the Resident Forum, Topic #10, CPN Website (as of 12-6-01). Anyone who sent in comments without a vote attached is on the forum. Check it out too.

And what you have had to say...

2-2 "Pay her. It is more useful to more people than a Rec Center would be. It has grown too big to be a volunteer position."

12-12 "I like the website and try to visit weekly. My concern is this, at 25 cents per family per week times 1900 homes (figure stated on the home page) that is $475 per week times 52 weeks is $24,700 per year. Seems a bit much to me."

12-04 "We believe that the CPN website is wonderful and appreciate Susan's dedication. However, several bids should be obtained from professional website companies. Then we can cast a vote based on substantial information."

  12-04

Oh my, we are going to play ping-pong. Whoever you are, why don't you identify yourself and email me and we will talk about your concerns.

12-03 "I believe it's a wonderful website and I truely appreciate Susan's dedication. However, being unfamiliar with the cost of maintaining a website, we owe ourselves several estimates from companies that do this professionally. Then put it to a vote."

  12-03

I'll take a spin at answering you - surprise! but I do this for a living professionally (I have done so since '93 - an eternity on the internet - I am self-employed and incorporated). I have invoicing of my rates through the last 3 years that show that CPN has received $47,000 of my time gratis (less the $2000 I received in 2001, which I have disclosed). I did this primarily in the spirit of community service, and yes, I did hope it would develop into something at least marginally equitable at some point because I am committed to the concept of community online and committed to CPN - I have been a resident since '86, it is my home too. In hindsight, it was a poor business decision to devote such time and resources. Ah well.

If you want to toss this out to other third-parties for bid, level the playing field and have them provide the origination interface, content and all the concepts you see online today - all things I have already provided. Or do you want them to bid on this work standing on my shoulders?

Is this what comes of creating and building something here? Why is it that no one was worried about my integrity when I was donating my software, hardware, wits and sweat all these months?

The irony - and it is an ironic universe - is that the rates I have asked for (25 cents/week/household) are far less than what "growth mode" 24/7 custom work commands (which is what this is and what sets us apart). I reduced rates because, and more is the pity, I care about what happens. But... if I have to wade through "we think she's screwing us" on top of it all - I would want out because people who can think that are not who I thought I was working so hard for these last 14 months (when it was my turn to act on simple trust and good faith).

Wow, have I lost my sense of humor. I hope it is temporary.

11-30 "None of the three choices represent my view. I simply selected one to make sure that my "vote" and comments were logged. I like the website and the information it provides. I am not opposed to the site being supported by dues; however, if it is to be supported by dues, the Master HOA should solicit bids for maintenance of the site from Susan and other individuals or companies. Then a decision should be made based on qualifications and bid amounts. I would like to know what, if any, increase in HOA dues would be required to support the site from dues."

Be reassured, all comments are posted. I don't always enjoy reading them, but I am faithful to getting them up if I receive them.

11-19 "I often go to the website, both as a user and as a supplier of information. This is such a great way to interact with the community and probably one of the cheapest forms of communication available. We'd be foolish to let this great website go to waste. It could use a lot more promotion via the newsletter, e-mail alerts, etc. People need to know it's out there for it to reach its fullest potential. Susan has been great to work with. She is excellent at what she does and is very responsive to our requests."

  11-19

"To repeat what someone else already said--this is a no-brainer. If CPN is going to have any form of community communications whatsoever, a vibrant (and therefore actively maintained) web site must be the first order of business. This web site should receive priority over any printed matter--this is 2001 after all.

So far as Susan's compensation: she should be paid properly for her time. If she doesn't do this for us we're going to have to hire someone."

11-16 "Are you kidding me? This is a no brainer. Pay up CPN."

11-16 I think Susan provides a valuable service. I frequent the site and rely on it to keep me apprised of news and events in my neighborhood."

11-15 "Without question the cost is minimal for the volume of information contained at this site. I can truly relate to the cumbersome hours you have devoted and you should be reaping a reasonable monetary compensation! If one is budget minded, think of it being less than 1 gallon of gas from the Total station and certainly less than a pack of gum, or less than "biggie" sizing a fast food meal!! You have my vote!"

11-14 "I think the site is marvelous and would hate to see it languish. I'd far rather contribute $1.00 per month or whatever than $115 to a rec center that is neither needed nor wanted in many cases. I hope you can continue -- we need this site."

11-13 "Go ahead--keep on rolling, just DON'T raise the dues!!!!!!! We already pay too much to live here."

11-3 "I thought we were already paying for the web site."

11-3 "I don't know the number of homes in CPN currently. I think the money paid to the webmaster for this site should equal about $5,000 per year. I would certainly be willing to pay my part of that. This is an excellent web site. I am very surprised that it has been put together voluntarily, due to the quality of both the contact and the structure."

11-2 "I already have problems paying all the CPN dues of which I do not use any of the facilities. Everything should be on subscription basis. If somebody wants it they can pay extra for it - I have major issues with the Rec Center !! BTW, the site is great but as a resident, it does not add any value for me. I just want to live here and not pay more on top of my mortgage!! Susan, I am a s/w engineer too and I feel that you should definitely look at your business!! Take Care!!"

  11-1

"The webmaster needs a new agent. From my calculations you should be getting a part of 30% of our Master Association dues. That would be a piece of $30,000 annually. According to Linda Nuzum's letter which refers to how our dues are allocated. In it she states, "...which also covers all of the other services provided by the Master Association, including this newsletter, the community web site and email alerts, and community social events..." If Anderson can get $5,000 a month out of the Metro district, I would think the webmaster should get his/her share. If not, decrease the amount that is given to the Parks Authority (currently 70%) and give it to our communication folks. With no Rec Center to fund, I think there should be plenty of cash left for the important things.

ps. I appreciate the webmaster's unbiased posting of our community forum. This is a full-time job for many people. Good job!"

To all the people who took the time to express their thoughts - thank you for speaking up and having a voice.
