Dear
Friends of Daniels Park Road:
Please
join Darrell Roberts, Chief Engineer of the Daniels Park Road Paving
Project, for a walk of the Road on Tuesday, July 10th at 4pm.
The
County is scheduling to begin paving in mid-August - after the Qwest
International Golf Tournament. The Road will be closed to traffic
during the paving which is estimated to take 4-6 weeks.
Paving
will begin at the South end of the road. At the North end of the
road sewer pipes will be laid under Daniels Park Road from roughly
the The Sanctuary's entrance to just north of Kirk Kimball's place
to tie in with CPV Metro treatment plant. The sewer pipe laying
should be complete at the time the paving from the South meets up
with it. Darrell will provide you with all the paving details during
the walk.
Here's
what The Friends of Daniels Park Road have accomplished...so far
- We
saved the lives of 17 trees.
- We
reduced the speed limit from 35 to 30 miles per hour.
- The
road will be paved to a 30 mile per hour design.
- Maintained
the same essential "historic" footprint.
-
Curves rounded rather than banked for speed.
- Lanes
will be painted an 11 foot width.
-
A no passing double yellow stripe will run the entire length of
the road.
Here's
what we still need to accomplish... Our fondest wish and biggest
challenge is to create the miracle needed to close the road to
all but the current abutters, park recreation, and emergency use;
and to preserve the road and its surrounds as an historic district.
- Closing
the road would eliminate the dust problem, thus the need for paving.
- With
official designation as an historic district, future generations
could see a tiny bit of the west just as Kit Carson and our ancestors
saw it.
The
Friends of Daniels Park Road are working to make that miracle happen...however,
we're running out of time for it to happen before paving starts
in mid-August!
Therefore:
- For
the safety of our Hockaday Heights Friends - we want 3-way stop
signs installed at both ends of Macon Drive.
-
To maintain the aesthetics of a rural, natural road, we want the
final roll of the asphalt to be sand colored...just as the road
looks now.
- The
Road will have 3-foot paved shoulders to accommodate cyclists,
walkers, and runners. We want a written guarantee from the County
that the width of the lanes will remain 11 feet in perpetuity
unless a well-publicized public hearing agrees otherwise.
Wildlife
viewing areas - Cherokee Ranch and Foundation does not want
an off-road viewing area, just south of its gate, overlooking the
meadow and pond where the elk and turkey gather. The county is considering
alternatives...we want to know what they are.
To
aid in securing designation as an historic district, we want
the road aligned so as to not obscure the historic Pretty Woman
Stage Coach Stop. We need to inspect the signage plan for wildlife
crossing, horse crossing, historic district, speed limit, no passing,
etc.
We
want all CPV construction vehicles to access The Summit and
any other area of the northern area of CPV under development via
the LeGae Gate which is due to be completed by this time next
year. Hockaday
Heights residents, who must use the road, are most affected by the
CPV construction vehicles using the planned Emergency Vehicle Entrance.
The
proposed plan to control all construction traffic with fines unless
they come and go via Sante Fe, using only the south end of Daniels
Park Road is unreasonable. The current plan has no time limit
on the use of the entrance. If the Emergency Vehicle Entrance is
to become a construction entrance, we must have a limit on its use
and recommend it be September 1, 2002.
